About the Center
The Center was established by King Abdulaziz University in 2014, earlier known as Geological Hazards Research Unit. Earlier to 2014, the center was a unit operated under the Faculty of Earth Sciences. The center now Functions under the activities of the Vice President for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research. Over the years the center has become a driving force for research and consulting in the field of natural hazards in the Kingdom. Due to its rapid growth and expertise, the center opened doors for various international universities and organizations to explore possible Geohazards through collaboration and cooperation in the Kingdom.
Geological Survey Projects
Client: NEOM
This project (RFP no. 100244-SO-053) was undertaken along the northwestern part of Saudi Arabia in the Midyan peninsula (a corridor 80 km long by 1 km wide) along the eastern coast of the Gulf of Aqaba.
To study and apply global research practices and standards to assess local and regional Geohazards.
GRC is an interdisciplinary group of researchers and postgraduate students from KAU and collaborating international universities that focuses on the geological hazards in Saudi Arabia. One of the main goals of GRC is to link researchers with different disciplines in KAU with GRC researchers to study different types of geological hazards especially Flash floods in coastal areas.
Geopark in Madinah City, Geotourism

The proposed geopark is located on the southern and eastern outskirts of the holy city of Al Madinah Al Munawarah (simplified as Al Madinah). It occupies the northern part of the well-known Harrat Rahat, which is the second largest volcanic field (“harrat” in Arabic) in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, the proposed geopark is named as the Harrat Rahat Volcanic Geopark.
